Participating in a Voter Registration Action
Updated over 3 months ago

Voter registration actions on Impactive allow participants to input their information, check themselves against the national voter file and determine whether or not they're registered to vote, take the next step to get registered if they aren't already, and view dates and deadlines about their state's elections. They can also copy a personalized referral link to help their friends and family check their registration status.

Voter registration actions are accessible via public URLs; they are different than other Impactive action types in that they do not require log in to Impactive in order to participate.

Because voter registration actions are simply webpages, they are accessible either via web (laptop/desktop computer) or mobile.

How to Participate in a Voter Registration Action

  • Participants will open the provided URL to land on the voter registration screen. The following screen, with the pop-up already open, is what participants will see if you share the "Web Link with auto open"; if you instead share the "Web Link", they will need to click the Get Started button to view this screen.

  • Participants have three options:

    • Check my voter registration: The primary CTA that most participants will click, to proceed with checking their registration. The remainder of this walkthrough will detail the steps of this option.

    • I'm not registered to vote: If a participant already knows that they aren't registered to vote, they can fill out this form to be taken directly to an Unregistered results screen, including the Register to Vote button to get registered.

    • Help other register to vote: If a participant already knows that they can't register to vote (due to age, immigration status, etc.) or they simply don't want to check their own registration status, but they do want to participate in referral link sharing, they can fill out this simpler form to access their referral link for the action.

  • After clicking Check my voter registration, participants will fill out the following form with their first/last name, full address, date of birth, phone number, and email address. They must agree to the action's terms and conditions and privacy policy, but they can choose to opt-out of being shown on the leaderboard, or to opt-out of receiving text messages from the organization.

  • Participants will then attempt to locate themselves from the voters present in the national voter file:

    • If they successfully locate themselves, they'll be taken to a "Registered" screen which displays the upcoming election dates and deadlines in their state:

    • If they can't locate themselves and click None of these are me, they'll be taken to an "Unregistered" screen that displays a prominent Register to Vote button; this button will take them to the relevant Secretary of State website for their state. If that state offers online voter registration, they'll be taken directly to that form; in the small number of states that do not offer online voter registration, they'll be taken either directly to the online PDF of the paper registration form for that state, or an information page on the Secretary of State website that describes how to proceed.

    • If they locate themselves but under an outdated address, they can indicate whether the old address (in the voter file) or the new address (that they just entered into the form) is the correct one. If they indicate that the old address is correct (perhaps they just made a mistake inputting the new address), they'll be taken to the "Registered" screen; if they indicate that the new address is correct, they'll be taken to the "Unregistered" screen, because they need to re-register at their new address.

  • Regardless of result, the final screen also displays the participant's personalized referral link, which they can use to recruit friends and family members to check their own registration statuses.
